It seems we rarely stick to the actual meals assigned to each particular day, so I am inclined to just write a few meals down with their shopping list, but I am determined to fall into a somewhat predictable schedule so again, I am going to offer a somewhat structured menu starting with tomorrow.
Wednesday (working in the office)- chicken soup with grilled cheese
Thursday (working in the office)- Baked potatoes
Friday (working in the office)- fend for yourself!
Saturday - Corn on the cob, keilbasa, and shrimp.
Sunday - Steak tips with peppered mushroom gravy
Did you realize that a medium-sized spud has only 110 calories, is naturally fat free, high in vitamin C and packs more potassium than a banana?
Monday (working in the office)- ham and beans with cornbread.
Tuesday - Loaded potato soup with banana bread
Wednesday (working in the office)- Turkey meatballs and vegetable soup with brown rice
Thursday (working in the office)- Cheesesteak pockets
Friday - Chicken cordon bleu
Saturday - baked potatoes with Bible study group.
Sunday - Chicken pot pie

Lane Up-dates
Samuel is such a funny kid. He says, "Mom, you're my feety-pies." He still has his Mohawk and absolutely loves it. A few weeks ago he put a wad of gum on his crown so he could look like Jimmy Newtron. He really did and was so proud, so I left it for two days before I cut it out. Unfit mother.
Noah is growing taller finally. Not sure puberty will hit him for a few more years though. He still has a few baby teeth! I am grateful though. Seems Keely swapped her Huggies for a Luna pad before I had even settled into driving a family van. It's amazing how fast children grow, and how quick parents grow old.
Noah has me laughing several times a day. He is the jokester in the house and has my humor completely, while poor Keely completely lacks a sense of humor. She was sterilizing instruments for me in the office and not wanting to spell Grave's speculum wrong on the package, she brought it in for clarification, Noah says, "Sheesh..Keely. Speculum is a first grade word!" Only the child of a midwife would say such a thing.
Simon is precious and adored by everyone. His seizures have become more frequent again and he's starting to pronate a bit, but I am refusing to have fear. He says "Baby" now each time he sees an animal, which is quite often since we have a petting zoo in the back-yard. We were in the kitchen the other day and the goat climbed the stairs and was knocking on the back door with her tail, hoping to come in and join the family. It is rather odd that our society decides big dogs are appropriate for living inside, but goats must stay outside, particularly when I wonder if maybe the goats are smarter.
Sunday after church we had an audience on the front sidewalk and women parked in a car parked in our ally pointing at our front porch. Mike asked if they were looking for someone and then realized, Secret our goat, had gotten out of the back-yard and was standing on the front porch railing eating our bushes. Hilarious. Thorntown really wasn't prepared for us.
The entire family went to the local dentist. They all go religiously every six months and Mike always has perfect teeth, as do the kids. He flosses everyday and uses Listerine. He deserves good teeth. I always have twelve cavities or more, often need a root canal or a crown of some sort. I don't floss often, and am not woman enough for Listerine. Six years ago, I finally found a kind dentist, spent nearly $1,000 on one side of mouth and failed to return for the second side for no particular good reason. I was ready to hear the worst at the visit, and had scheduled two follow-up visits to fill the plethora of cavities I was well aware needed attention. You wouldn't believe the shock when I walked out needing only one filling. What?
One other time in my life I skipped going to the dentist for many years and the same situation occurred. I had neglected to get fillings taken care of and then years later they weren't even evident in my mouth. The dentist at that time said my previous dentist was filling spots that weren't entirely cavities and was weakening the enamel on my teeth. It seems I tend to choose those highly interventive dentists because I can easily walk out with ten cavities after just having had them filled six months previously. I left this dentist's office very grateful, and darn certain I wouldn't return for several more years. Mike thought I needed another opinion. Why would I go searching for worse news?!
Did I mention the boys got hit by a car? Scary day. Not fair for any woman without even a grey hair on her head to experience the crap that I have endured. I'll spare the gory details, the paramedics, the police, the screaming mother running through my house searching for the boy's parents, me running into the crowd without shoes or a bra on, and I'll spare the intense arguments that ensued within our family after the ordeal. They are fine now. Samuel is a bit terrified to cross the street and while Noah originally thought he was the worst brother in the world, he's back to arguing with him, so all is well. They may never ride a bike again though and yes, I was the horrible mother that screams at her nearly dead children at the scene of the accident for not having their helmets on. I hate that about myself and I hate that I so enjoy the lazy days when I don't shower and wear my robe most of the day. That will certainly guarantee an accident that I'll have to respond to, in all my glory.
We spent time at my sister's this year for Thanksgiving. While I absolutely love cooking and hosting family dinners, it was so nice to have no worries or preparations this year. The food was phenomenal and it was nice to come back home to a clean house. Christmas will be celebrated here, so we'll have to get the menu planned.

Catching Up
I have absolutely no time to blog but that seems like the best time to dump some thoughts and then tackle the day. The last few months have been rather over-whelming, in many ways, mostly good. Our practice has more than doubled in clientele since Holly has joined us. We are now averaging between seven and twelve births a month and it seems to be increasing even from there. June already has several booked.
Our clients as well, are increasingly more high risk and require a great deal more time and management. Holly is a complete God-send. She is exceptionally kind and compassionate, yet has no fear of confrontation. She is intelligent and holds high esteem for evidence-based care and appropriately rationalizing her decisions. I genuinely could not have molded a more perfect midwifery partner and have spent much time imaging God crafting her for this practice. It is quite amazing to think that when I opened the practice, the Lord placed Holly in midwifery school. Preparing us both, equipping us for this very day.
Holly has a desire for post-graduate studies as well, which just thrills me. We have both committed to returning for our PhDs and I believe I'll apply first at Vanderbilt. She's already been excepted to the Michigan program and plans to develop a program for teaching sensitive female exams.
Holly isn't at all intimidated by this profession, and I can see us both making a real impact with regards to the future of homebirth. She challenges me, which I find so very exciting and inspiring! I pray the Lord continues to build our relationship, balances our demands and guards us against fatigue. I also pray our husbands are built up by our professional demands and I can find comfort again in being off-call, so I can really be with my family.
More to come... my trip to the dentist, salty friends, lots of adorable kid pictures, plans for writing my first book, Bible study...
